Josiah offers piano lessons in classical, jazz, and church (traditional or contemporary) styles, as well as lessons in music theory, composition, and aural skills. His studio serves students ranging from beginners to pre-professional musicians in pursuit of creativity, confidence, well-roundedness, and excitement about music.

About Josiah

Josiah is a graduate of Messiah University with additional training at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. His previous teachers and mentors include Graeme Burgan (collaborative piano and  vocal coaching), Dr. Patrice Ewoldt (collaborative piano), Frederic Chiu (piano performance), Dr. Jim Colonna (wind conducting and composition), and Dr. Nancy Galbraith (composition). 

His musical background includes solo, chamber, and large ensemble music as a pianist, oboist, and choral singer, as well as composition and arranging in contemporary-classical, film/video game, and modern popular styles. 

He also has diverse experiences as an educator, having worked in elementary general- and special-education classrooms as a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide, as well as an academic tutor in subjects ranging from first grade reading to undergraduate calculus and physics.

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

Josiah offers an individualized approach to music that focuses on physical, mental, and emotional self-awareness and a holistic and sustainable practice routine. He draws on his musical and professional training as well as his extensive experience as a track and field athlete to develop this unique approach. These points of emphasis allow students to connect their hearts, minds, and bodies to the music, build their physical and mental longevity, and become self-directed learners and musicians.

Piano lessons typically focus on:

  • Developing strong, healthy technique

  • Well-roundedness through traditional note-reading, improvisation, and ear-training

Composition lessons typically focus on:

  • Development of original ideas
